JUNYA

JUNYA WATANABE: A Brief History

JUNYA WATANABE is a Japanese fashion label founded by designer Junya Watanabe, who began his career at Comme des Garçons after graduating from Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo. He launched his own line under the Comme des Garçons group in 1992.

Watanabe quickly became known for combining experimental construction with highly wearable clothing. His designs often reinterpret familiar pieces such as denim jackets, military garments, workwear, trench coats, and tailoring through unusual cutting, patchwork, technical fabrics, and reconstructed details.

A major part of JUNYA WATANABE’s identity is collaboration. Over the years, the brand has worked with companies including Levi’s, The North Face, Carhartt, New Balance, Nike, and Brooks Brothers, blending iconic products with Watanabe’s distinctive design approach.

Rather than following seasonal trends, JUNYA WATANABE focuses on craftsmanship, structure, and the transformation of classic garments.

Today, the label is recognized internationally as one of Japan’s most influential designer brands, combining avant-garde experimentation with practical menswear and street-inspired design.
