山本耀司

The history of Yohji Yamamoto is one of revolution. He challenged the conventions of mainstream Western fashion and pioneered what became known as the “black aesthetic.” Below are some of the key milestones in his development:

  1. Early Years (1970s)

1972: Yohji Yamamoto established Y’s Co., Ltd., marking the beginning of the brand’s journey.

Design Philosophy: Initially, Yamamoto focused on creating functional and comfortable everyday clothing for women. Through the launch of Y’s in Tokyo, he aimed to design clothes that would allow women to feel as comfortable and confident as they did in menswear.

  1. Paris and the Emergence of the “Black Aesthetic” (1980s)

1981 — Paris Debut: Yohji Yamamoto made his Paris Fashion Week debut alongside Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons, presenting designs that radically challenged conventional fashion. Characterized by black, asymmetry, oversized silhouettes, and deliberately unfinished details, their work was controversially labeled “Hiroshima chic” by some members of the media and sparked what became known as the “Black Shock.”
